This sunset was taken looking out over the Western Cascades along the Timberline Trail on Mt. Hood.  This location is approximately 2 miles from Timberline Lodge just before the trail goes down and across Zigzag canyon.  We were here for sunset pictures of Mt. Hood.  We were through with sunset on the mountain when my friend Ron turned around and said, “Wow look at that view!”  And what a view it was.  Looking to the southwest we looked through the trees and over Zigzag canyon out over the rolling ridges of the ancient Western Cascades.  This part of the Cascades may be as old as 40 million years and thus have lost the sharp outlines of volcanoes we find in the High Cascades such as Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson and others.  Just starting to glow high in the western sky is a sliver of the new moon.  I especially liked the contrast between the bluish haze on the rolling ridges of the mountains of the Western Cascades and the reds and yellows on the sunset.
