Reflections of Huckleberries at Surprise Lakes, Indian Berry Fields (Philip A. Knouf)

While the season for picking huckleberries was past at the time I created this image, the huckleberry reflections in one of the Surprise Lakes was delightful to witness.  This area is part of the Sawtooth Berry Fields in the northern part of the Indian Heaven Wilderness.  There are many small lakes in this area that provide unique huckleberry reflections for the adventuresome willing to both drive some challenging roads and walk rough terrain.  But the result as you can see here is well worth the effort.  Last year the color was two or three weeks later due to the much more moist late summer and early fall.  This year the rains were yet to start even into October.  The moist, cloudy and misty conditions we usually have this time of year help to provide softer illumination and more intense saturated colors.  Still, using my luminosity masking techniques I was able to manage the more harsh light I found this year.
